Six years ago, Jeff Clapp was watching a National Geographic special about Mount Everest and the decades of trash left behind by climbers. He was inspired to travel to Nepal and see the situation firsthand. What he found were the raw materials for a unique and captivating project - Bells from Everest.
Clapp ships used oxygen tanks - brought down from the mountain by sherpas - to his studio in Maine, and turns them into bells, bowls and holiday ornaments. The money he spends to aqcuire the bowls provides another source of revenue for the nativepeoples of Nepal, while encouraging the continued clean up of the world's tallest mountain. Even Reinhold Messner, famous for climbing without oxygen tanks, has purchased items from Jeff!
The Mountaineers are proud to host Jeff for this special presentation, which features a slide show of his travels and process for converting the tanks, followed by a Q & A session. There is limited space for this talk, please reserve your tickets early!
