Access to Carbon River Road Closed TemporarilyAccess to Carbon River Road Closed Temporarily
Mount Rainier National Park Superintendent Dave Uberuaga has announced a temporary closure of the Carbon River Road to hiking and bicycle use from Tuesday, September 18 at 8.00 a.m. until Sunday, September 23 at 8.00 p.m. due to heavy equipment operations. The Carbon River Entrance Station will remain open, along with the Rainforest Loop Trail.
The Carbon River Road has been closed to vehicular traffic since November 2006, when major flooding damaged the road.
From September 18 through 23, the park will install several flood protection structures within the damaged road bed, to prevent more damage when rains return in the fall and winter.
The park is considering a range of alternatives for the future of the Carbon River corridor, and will seek public input through an Environmental Assessment in 2008.
