Aug. 10-12: Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs 75th Anniversary ConventionFederation of Western Clubs 75th Anniversary Convention
August 10-12, 2007
As the American frontier closed in the late 19th century, people throughout the west began to gather in local outdoor clubs. They sought to enjoy nature rather to exploit it. They longed for a different relationship to the land - one of respect that was rooted in a new ethic.
As their numbers grew, they felt the need to cooperate and coordinate their work to preserve and enjoy nature. In 1932, they banded together to form the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs (FWOC). It has carried this work forward ever since, representing nearly four dozen clubs in eight states.
Each year, delegates of the FWOC's member groups gather to discuss and take positions on pressing issues. This year's convention - celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the group - is hosted by The Mountaineers at Summit Lodge at Snoqualmie Pass. The event features panel discussions, presentations on the Wild Sky Area and the IronĀ Goat Trail, and awards.
All members of The Mountaineers are invited to take part in some or all of the convention's activities, but participants must register in advance through the FWOC website.
