Park Butte, Railroad Grade, Scott PaulTrails
09/27/13 - 09/29/13
TBD. Friday morning carpools to be arranged once the roster is set.
All Mountaineer activities, including backpack trips, are restricted to members over the age of 18 unless the trip is explicitly listed as a youth activity and led by a Qualified Youth Leader. This backpack trip is for adults age 18+.
On Friday we`ll hike 3 to 4 miles (1,540-2,000 feet of elevation) to our base camp near the Railroad Grade. Camping is permitted at only a few designated campsites, so expect to share a tent.
From camp on Friday and Saturday, we`ll carry light packs up the Easton Glacier`s lateral moraine (the Railroad Grade), to the Park Butte lookout, and 4 miles cross country to Meadow Point where one looks down to the impressive Deming Glacier.
Sunday we`ll exit via the Scott Paul trail (7 miles) that traverses the alpine band before dropping to the trailhead and completing a 20 mile exploration through this most impressive area.
`Staying found` and route finding skills will be emphasized, so bring a good map of the area, compass, and an altimeter if you have one. Expect two potentially difficult stream crossings; bring some light shoes to wear and a pack towel for feet drying.
We`ll arrange carpools after the roster is set. Expect a 1 ½-2 mph pace, with time for photos and snack breaks. Late September weather is unpredictable, so bring warm layers and sleeping system, and raingear. Gear sharing will be discussed in leader emails prior to the trip.
The trip may be moved or canceled if weather or trail conditions are unsafe on the trip dates.
