Thorson is named Mt. Jefferson on the USGS quad. Route 1 description a in Olympic Mountains Climbing Guide (4th edition) is mostly out of date. Follow road #2401 for about 8.5 miles past its intersection with road #2480. Road is blocked with boulders just short of last crossing of Jefferson Creek at foot of NE face of Mt. Washington. Hike up road about 2 miles. Turn L on side road just past big rock on L. Continue 0.2 mile to opening near Goober Pond. After this point, road is too overgrown to continue. Head straight uphill in second-growth forest (post-logging) until large avalanche track comes into view. Head straight uphill in unlogged forest, staying to E (climber's R) of avalanche track. When hillside steepens, traverse into avalanche track and head upwards on talus, scree, dirt, and steep meadows. Angle left to foot of cliffs and descend 100 ft to start of gully leading to saddle west of Thorson. Ascend to R on more scree/talus, then scrub trees, to notch in ridge SW of summit. Scramble up ridge to W (highest summit). Early season ascent less tedious because snow covers talus/scree. However, route has considerable avalanche activity in winter/early spring. Time: 5 hours up. Reconnoitered July 13, 2013, by Jeff Foster.
This is a late listing. If at least two students sign up, I will go. Preference to Olympia Scrambling students. On-line description is taken from Olympic Mountains Climbing Guide.
