Mount Baldy Upper Maynard Burn (Olympics)
Off the regular routes, this one takes us to the superior NE corner alpine viewspot of the Olympics. Mt Tyler is right next door via a short ridge. NW Forest Pass required for vehicles.
Originally scheduled for 6/26, but changed to this date due to bad weather forecast on 6/26. Craig Romano's book Day Hiking Olympic Peninsula describes this hike like this, what could be more beautiful than hiking into Royal Basin? How about hiking above it and getting an eagle's-eye view into that glacially carved valley flanked by towering spires and icy summits. The hike to Baldy is brutal - it's one of the steepest trails in the Olympics.... But for your sweat and toil you are rewarded with one of the supreme views on the peninsula... If this sounds fun, join me as we decide for ourselves if he is right. Please note we will most likely continue from the false summit to the summit of Mt Baldy for a better look. You should feel comfortable hiking off trail on a boot path for about half a mile. Make sure you are in condition for this hike as it's going to be a long, long day with the drive and all. Change in destination or cancellation if poor weather.
