PCT Chinook Pass to Bluebell Pass
Chinook Pass PCT junction
This hike joins the PCT at Chinook Pass on highway 410, paralleling the highway on cliffs above for about a mile, before rounding little Sheep Lake and breaking out into flower gardens and grassy fields to a sequence of high passes starting with Sourdough and continuing with Bear, Pickhandle and Blue Bell. From a ridge above Sourdough, look down on Crystal Mountain and survey the vast Emmons Glacier. The route reaches a high point of 6500 feet and rolls through modest climbs and descents until, sadly, one must turn back and retrace steps to the start to get back while it's still daylight.
This will be a scoping trip for a backpack the following weekend. Our route and distance will depend on snow and trail conditions, weather and fitness of the group. This trip is for well-conditioned hikers prepared to travel fast with few rest stops. We will start and end in the parking lot at Chinook Pass.
