Backcountry Iron Chef

Seattle Under the Hill Rovers
Think you're a good backcountry cook? Come prove it at Backcountry Iron Chef. We'll backpack in and hold an Iron Chef-style cooking competition to see whose cuisine reigns supreme!
The UTHRs - the Mountaineers group for those in their 20's and 30's - is proud to present everyone's favorite annual backpacking tradition, this time with 100% more nonsensical cooking show! If you've joined us in past years, you probably remember the fun of cooking a steak in the backcountry, and enjoying something other than Mountain House. This year, we're taking it up a notch. We'll do the gourmet backcountry cookout, but will also have a potluck with a twist. Plan to bring a dish to share, and plan to incorporate the secret ingredient into your dish! You won't find out what the secret ingredient is until the potluck, so it will be a fun last minute twist. If you're an amateur chef (like most of us), don't worry - the ingredient is really easy. This trip is about a 4-5 mile pack in and around 2500 feet of gain. We'll move at a leisurely pace, and when we arrive at the famous flower meadow, will make camp. After we make camp, we'll do a few side hiking trips, which are optional but highly suggested. Specific destination will depend on weather, group ambition, etc. but usually are half-day affairs up to the ridge tops or exploring around the meadows. There are lots of possibilities! For dinner, we'll have our usual gourmet cookout, plus the Iron Chef potluck. I may or may not wear a kimono to announce the secret ingredient. After we've done the potluck, we'll vote on winners, and I'll have some kind of prize for categories such as best dish, most creative dish, more creative violation of the rules, and so forth! On Sunday, we'll get up, do another short hike, and strike camp after lunch. We'll hike out and stop for dinner on the way home. Contact leader by email if you have questions, and we'll see you soon!
