Wedge Mountain - 8 miles RT, 4200' gain; S4, T2
Wedge Mountain is located 8 miles SSW of Leavenworth with road access from the Blewett Pass Highway US-97. Lingering snow and deeply rutted roads make this a longer trip (8 miles) with more elevation gain (4200') than advertised in 75 Scrambles in Washington and in Wenatchee Outdoors. We won't be doing the rock section to the true summit, so the result will be a purely snow scramble with a revised S4, T2 rating. Due the the amount of elevation gain and lack of suitable terrain we won't be doing any ice axe arrest practice on this trip. Don't buy maps - I'll provide JPEG format TOPOs via email later on Friday, May 3.
Wedge offers a spectacular view westward into the interior of the Enchantment Range, featuring the Snow Lakes, McClellan Peak, Little Annapurna, Dragontail Peak, The Temple, Cannon Mt and Edward Peak; to the northwest lie the North Cascades; to the north are the Entiat Mountains. The summit overlooks the Wenatchee River valley from Tumwater Canyon to Sunny Slope, north of Wenatchee. Visible to the east is Burch Mountain, Horse Lake Mountain, and Mission Ridge. Bring your camera!
Ice axe and helmet are required.
