Tacoma Hiking

John Konopasek

8:30 AM

Carbon River Ranger Station or Carpool TBD

With the closure of the Carbon River Road due to major washouts, this hike now starts at the Carbon River Entrance to MRNP, requiring hiking or mountain biking 5 miles up the road to Ipsut Creek Backcountry Camp. From Ipsut it is 3 miles to the suspension bridge and the glacier overlook. The 5 miles of road hike take you through lush, old growth forest and around the various major washouts that pretty clearly demonstration 1) the power of water and 2) the abilities of the Park and volunteer trail work crews.
This hike is from Carbon River Ranger station entrance (Mt. Rainier NP) to Carbon Glacier or as far as we can safely go based on snow and status of log bridges. At minimum this is 10 miles round trip to ipsut camp or a max of 17 miles to Carbon Glacier, and back. There are ~9 log bridge / crossings. Most with one sided hand rails.
I'll call the ranager station to get information and will be scouting the trail the day before.
Parking is outside park (no fee). Entrance fee is ~$10 or waived if you have a NP pass. Bring the 10 essentials. Microspikes recommended. Bear spray optional. Dogs not allowed on these trails in NP.
