TRIP
Foothills Hiking

Cheryl Talbert

8:00 AM

Chirico Trailhead

This is a conditioning hike so we will keep up a brisk pace (2-2.5 mph uphill) with few stops. Carry food to nibble along the way, as we will not take an extended sit-down lunch break. We will shuttle cars up to the parking lot at Tiger Summit on highway 18 and hike first to East Tiger Summit (3000') then around on roads and trails either up to the Hikers Hut near West Tiger 1 and on down to Poo Poo Point (weather permitting) or around on the TMT and One View trail directly to Poo Poo Point. If we do the full trip including West Tiger 1 the hike will be 12.2 miles, otherwise around 10. Over half of the hike is on closed forest service roads, and we could find 8-12 inches of snow on the ground in places. Microspikes will be required for slippery sections on the way up or down West Tiger 1; showshoes might be a good idea to carry along just in case we find ourselves postholing on the way to the top of East Tiger. Dress in non-cotton layers with a sturdy waterproof shell and rainpants, and wear sturdy waterproof footwear. You will get warm and possibly sweaty on the uphills and could get cold on the downhills so be prepared! Trekking poles are recommended for the descents. We will go rain or shine, and should get back to the TH by around 3:30PM. Don't forget your 10 essentials including a compass and the Green Trails tiger mountain map...it can be a maze up there.
