Mount Ellinor - Winter Route
Tacoma Alpine Scrambling
Don Campbell, Jr
Hoodsport, Wa Ranger Station
Student Snow Scramble for credit for Tacoma Alpine Scrambling students - reference Mt. Ellinor, (S) (USGS Mt. Washington, Mt. Steel; Green Trails Mt. Steel No. 167). Meet at the Hoodsport Ranger Station parking lot at 0730 (early start means the snow will still be decently hard and human traffic will be light). Ice axe, helmets, and 10E's required - bring crampons or micro-spikes. Bring glissade pants for the 1500 ft. trip down a winding, wild glissade route (one of the best you'll experience). Good trip for cameras as the views are stunning. If you have a video camera, bring it for the glissade trip. Trip is roughly 1,000 ft. in the woods on bare trail, then approximately 1,500 ft. straight up a snow chute to the summit. Could be a little longer if the upper trail head isn't clear of snow. Leader Notes From Olympia, north on US 101 for approximately 15 miles to Hoodsport. Turn left (west) onto State Route 119 (at the hamburger joint on corner). Ranger station will be immediately on the right in a grey wood building after you turn. Bring Northwest Forest Pass. Should be a decently short trip, back to Tacoma early afternoon (3-4 pm) if all goes well.
