Part 1 of 2 Risk Assessment / Incident Management
Olympia Mountaineers Sea Kayaking's 2nd Annual Risk Assessment / IM class is coming up on Friday night March 15th and Saturday March 23.
Friday night March 15th will be lecture and open discussion on three topics, all related to Risk Assessment / IM:
Henry Romer will talk about Circles of Defense, i.e. the what, when, and how of decisions that drive a situation into deep trouble, or can pull it back to safety.
Tim Force, a recent Mtnr kayak class graduate and Fireman for City of Redmond, will talk about the Fire Departments' approach to Incident Management. You will quickly see how a FD incident management plan crosses over to sea kayaking or any other outdoor activity.
Last item will be a round table discussion of an avalanche that occurred on Mount Baker last year. The New York Times published an electronic article on the incident called Snow Fall The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek, By John Branch. http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/#/?part=tunnel-creek . The article is a bit long but excellent, an absolutely riveting description of the social dynamics that drove the situation to its disastrous conclusion. Please read it (or review it if you've already read it and it's been awhile) at least once before the IM class. You will easily see how at almost any point someone could have said something that may have changed the out come.
The March 15th classroom session will be held at the coach house from 6pm to 10pm. Feel free to come a little early and bring your dinner.
More information for the March 23rd on the water session will be sent at a later date.
