August 2-6, Fri.-Tue. – Berg Lake Trail, Mt Robson Provincial Park, Canadian Rockies (National Geographic – Jasper North 83 E/3) 26 mi RT 2,600’ gain. Moderate pace. Berg Lake, is one of the most spectacular destinations in the Canadian Rockies. The trail traverses three bio-geo-climatic zones and circles behind towering Mt Robson to reach Berg Lake. The lake nestles beneath Mt Robson’s (12,972’) mighty Emperor Face, where the Berg glacier descends steeply to the shore of the turquoise lake. We will spend two nights at Berg Lake to afford us an optional day hike to Snowbird Pass known as one of the finest day trips in the area with exceptional views of ice-covered east slopes of Mt Robson. Possible wildlife sightings include caribou, elk, moose, mountain goat, mule-and white-tailed deer, grizzly and black bear, and of course the ever-present marmot. Proposed itinerary: 8/02 - meet at Mt Robson Visitor Center, pick up permits, drive to TH, backpack to Whitehorn campground; 8/03 - backpack to Berg Lake campground. 8/04 – optional day hike to Snowbird Pass (14 mi RT); 8/05 - backpack back to Whitehorn campground; 8/06 – Backpack out to TH. There is a limit of 6 experienced backpacker and preference will be given to those also registering for the Skyline Trail BP in Jasper National Park from July 27-31. Trail campground reservations have been made in advance. In case of inclement weather, we may opt for Mt Fitzwilliam backpack and/or for day hikes in the Jasper area. Total camping and permit fees, excluding your own transportation and lodging before and after the backpack, amount to $61.00 of which $15.00 is a non-refundable reservation fee.
