COST: $200.00* club members, $300.00* non-members, *The course fee includes a student handout but does not include the course textbook, membership dues for The Mountaineers or equipment and clothing. Two additional courses with separate costs are required for graduation: Navigation and MOFA.
Materials & Equipment: A student handout is provided as part of the course. The course textbook, purchased by the student, is Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, 8th Edition. Equipment requirements for each student will be emailed prior to the start of the course. Equipment necessary for the course includes a large daypack, sturdy mountaineering boots, crampons, climbing helmet, ice ax, synthetic or wool outdoor clothing, rain gear, first-aid kit, compass, and various other items. Equipment information will be discussed at the first lecture. It is recommended that you NOT purchase new items prior to the first lecture.
Graduation Requirements: 1. Attend and pass all scheduled lectures and field trips, 2. Score 75% or more on the Final Exam, 3. Successfully complete a Mountaineer conditioner hike, 4. Successfully complete three required Mountaineer scrambles, 5. Successfully complete the Navigation course, 6. Successfully complete the MOFA/1st Aid Course, 7. Participate in day of trail, lodge or lookout maintenance, 8. Graduation packet approval by the Tacoma Mountaineers Alpine
