Backcountry Iron Chef is simple. First we backpack in to a beautiful backcountry destination, just like any other backpack. Unlike any other backpack, we'll have a backcountry cooking competition when we get there! Just like the show, there will be a secret theme ingredient that you'll have to incorporate into your dishes, but I promise it will be easy. Whoever's cuisine is judged the best will win (perhaps an actual prize, but bragging rights for now)!
The rules are pretty simple:
- You must pick a dish type to make (entree, side, or desert) ahead of time when you register. For obvious reasons there are limits to each type, so register early to get your first choice!
- You must bring all of the supplies you need to cook your dish with you. If you need a cast iron skillet, bring it. If you need a hot dog stick, bring it or make it. The trip in is intentionally easy and flat so you can bring more stuff if you need it.
- You have to incorporate the theme ingredient into your dish. Beyond that, what you make is up to you! If you want to make a Mountain House and call that your entry, go for it - you probably won't win and I'll probably laugh, but go for it!
- Judging will be done by your peers.
- There will be a certain amount of food you'll be expected to make (basically enough so that everyone can have a few tastes).
Those are the important rules - I'll send out more details as we get closer to the event, after you sign up.
I'm looking forward to seeing the creativity that people come up with! This is a great chance to try some new recipes that go beyond just dehydrated food, and sample other options at the same time. How many times do you get to cook gourmet in the backcountry? Come join us - this is going to be a blast and a fantastic way to end the summer!
