Grade II, 3rd Class. Leave the Royal Basin trail 4-miles from the Dungeness River trail at about 4,500ft. climb W ½ mile through small timber and brush. Continue climbing on scree slopes to the saddle between Walkinshaw and the Gray Wolf Ridge. Follow the ridge S and then ascend chimneys and slabs on the N side to the summit. Time up: 4-hours from the trail.

This will be an exploratory trip. In preference to the usual route, we will attempt to gain the gap between the shale of GreyWolf Ridge and the basalt of The Needles by traversing GreyWolf ridge (over Baldy and the GreyWolf summits). Car camp at the TH for an early morning start. Alternatively, meet at the TH about 5:00 am. If the weather looks to be better on Sunday, be prepared to delay the trip by one day.
