We will camp three nights at Poplar Flat Campground along the Twisp River Road access to the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness and North Cascades National Park. It is suggested that participants also camp Monday night due to the travel distance and early hike start time the following day -- Twisp Pass, Scatter Lake, North Lake and Blue Lake – see hike descriptions below. Co-leader: Susan Reiley (s7/9-8/29) NC Sept. 4, Tue. – Twisp Pass (S) (GT – Stehekin #82) NWFP 9 mi, 2,400’gain. Moderate pace. The trail ascends moderately through woods, crosses a log bridge over the North Fork of the Twisp River, scoots around the south side of Lincoln Butte and traverses a rocky slope to the pass (6,100’). Views of pyramid-shaped Twisp Mountain, Cresent Mountain, South Creek Butte are seen, as well as the lush forested valley below. Meet 9:00 a.m. at Poplar Flat Campground (s7/9-8/29). NC Sept. 5, Wed. – North Lake (M) (GT – Stehekin #82) NWFP 9.6 mi, 2,300’gain. Moderate pace. The trail goes north from the parking lot and meanders through forest for a mile to follow North Creek. It then crosses avalanche paths and subalpine forest to the lake. If time permits, we may walk up the nearby ridge for views. Meet 8:30 a.m. at Poplar Flat Campground (s7/9-8/29). NC Sept. 6, Thur. – Libby Lake (S) (GT – Buttermilk Butte #83 & Prince Creek #115) NWFP 11 mi, 3,200’gain. Moderate pace. A steep and sometimes rocky trail to scenic 7,620-foot Libby Lake (highest in Washington) dramatically ringed by landslides on three sides and giant larch trees on the other, golden in the fall. The trail starts on an old skid road, enters old growth forest, then climbs to a forested ridge with occasional views along the way. Meet 8:30 a.m. at Poplar Flat Campground (s7/9-8/29). NC Sept. 7, Fri. – Blue Lake (M) (GT Washington Pass #50), NWFP, 4.5 mi., 1,100’ gain. Moderate pace. Observe the cliffs of Liberty Bell and Early Winters Spires from a rock-rimmed mountain lake. Meet at Popular Flat Campground at 8:30 a.m. or Blue Lake trailhead at 9:30 a.m. (s7/9-8/29)
