August 4-11, Sat. – Sat. – Eagle Cap Wilderness, Southeast High Pass Loop, Wallowa Mountains, Oregon (S) (USGS 7.5 min. quad. maps – Cornucopia, Eagle Cap, and Krag Peak) NWFP 40 mi, 8,500’ cumulative gain for backpack, plus 2,500 for day hikes. This clockwise trip for experienced backpackers begins and ends at the East Fork Eagle Creek Trailhead in the southeastern Wallowas and includes old-growth forests, high alpine lakes and meadows, granitic peaks and ridges, three passes (Horton, Glacier and Hawkins ranging in elevation from 8,400-8,500’), wild and scenic rivers, and an abundance of wildlife and profusely-colored wildflowers. On our second day, depending of weather, trail, and snow conditions, we plan to hike a side trail with light packs from Horton Pass up to the summit of Eagle Cap Peak and then descend to our camp at the upper Lakes Basin. We will enjoy such lakes as Mirror, Moccasin, Glacier, Frazier, Crater and possibly Hidden and Prospect Lakes. Water is available from creeks and lakes along the route and some snow may linger on passes. We will camp in the upper reaches of East Fork Eagle Creek, Lakes Basin (probably two nights), Frazier Lake, along South Fork Imnaha River and Crater Lake. Bear canisters or sacks recommended. Access by road to southeast Wallowas from Seattle is through Baker City (6 hrs.) and Halfway (7 hrs.). Our meeting place will be at a pre-arranged location early in the morning on August 4. Following the backpack, we will visit Hat Point Lookout with its spectacular views of Hells Canyon and Seven Devils Mountains, and consider an optional two-mile day hike to a viewpoint of Sluice Creek Canyon. We will likely stay at Halfway and Joseph on the nights of the 10th and 11th. Limit 6 persons due to camping restrictions in Lake Basin area.
