This class is open to anyone who wishes to learn to safely enjoy sport climbing, as well as those already accomplished rock and gym climbers who wish to expand and round out their skills. There are no prerequisites for the class. This is a perfect course for new members that have not yet taken any course but have an interest in rock climbing, continuing students from scrambles or basic programs that have an interest in sport climbing, and gym climbers that want to transition to setting up their own top ropes and anchors and enjoy independent climbing on great sport routes. Prospective intermediate climbing students are especially encouraged to take the course: Learning to lead sport routes will help significantly with the learning process for leading the alpine rock routes that you will encounter in the intermediate course.
This is a student-centered course: Learning objectives will be dependent on students’ interests and skills. We will customize teaching to each student’s skills and interests. Topics of instruction include: climbing sport routes on top rope, leading sport routes using bolts and quickdraws, setting up anchors on bolts and chains, clipping bolts, belay technique, rappel technique, climbing signals and communication, untying from rope at anchor and transitioning to rappel, lowering techniques, necessary knots, and safe use of equipment. There will be an emphasis on safety.
Cost is $125 Members, $175 Non-members. Required equipment: Helmet, harness, rock shoes, personal anchor system, several carabiners & slings. Optional but recommended equipment: rope, chalk bag, quick draws.
