Mt Rainier/Emmons Glacier
08/02/13 - 08/04/13
White River Campground
**REMINDER** This climb is subject to the PRIORITY CLIMBS LIST. Please verify that your branch has priority for this climb.
Ascend 1,500' up the middle of the InterGlacier, bearing slightly SE to reach the glacier rim (9,000') at Camp Curtis. Do a traversing descent to the Emmons Glacier and ascend the Emmons to Camp Schurman (9,500') at the base of Steamboat Prow. Arrive early for good campsite (hut is for emergencies only). From Camp Schurman, follow a smooth snow slope called ñthe Corridorî slightly E, to about 12,000'. Here the glacier becomes heavily crevassed and offers many variations in routes to the crater rim. The usual routes go straight up and left, or bear right and across to the saddle between the true summit, Columbia Crest, and Liberty Cap. The actual summit (14,411') is on the far W side of the crater rim. The summit register is just below at a large boulder. This is a strenuous climb on a very large mountain. Excellent physicalconditioning is mandatory. A climbing fee is required.
Tentative plan as of 4/28, as campsite reservation has not been confirmed. Participants should be prepared for either an alternate destination or taking a chance the morning of, if reservations cannot be made. Sign up commits participant to purchase of Mt. Rainier climbing permit ($44 / person), which was sent in with camp reservation. Leader will need to receive payment or proof of valid permit within two weeks of sign up (via mail or electronic), or sign up will be canceled and next person moved up from waitlist. Camp Friday night in Glacier Basin, Saturday night in Camp Schurman. Assistant leader is Micah Leibbrand. He will be coordinating logistics.
