Silver Peak (winter)
Seattle Alpine Scrambling
Carolyn Graham (Qualified Youth Leader)
Issaquah Transit Center
The goal of this trip will be to scramble Red Mountain 5890’, (the one near Kendall Peak at Snoqualmie Pass).
Red Mountain has a large steep west face. Because of its angle and length, we will only attempt to scramble it if avalanche conditions are rated "moderate" between 4000 and 6000 feet. If the avy danger is "Low", the risk of failed self-arrest too great. In that case we will attempt Mt Margaret.
Assuming we get the right conditions and it works out to scramble Red Mountain, real climbing crampons will be essential along with experience in using them.
Meet inside the Issquah Transit Center parking garage on the first floor in the Northeast corner at 7:00 AM.
- Ice Axe is always required.
- MSR Snowshoes are required. Contact me if you have another brand that you feel provide as much traction.
- Crampons are absolutely required for this trip.
- Helmet is required.
- Avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and the skills to use them are highly recommended but not required for participation.
-No parking pass required for Red Mt
We will park at Summit West Ski area, then head up the Commonwealth Basin on the South/east side of the creek. Eventually we will cross a fork of the creek and follow the route of the summer trail to the base of Red and then head up the slope.
Here is a link to printable map of the area, (the very center of which is Red Mountain): http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=47.452585,-121.393819&t=t4&z=15 I would encourage you to review and print this map. If you can't get the 'Mapping Support' print feature to work, Press Ctrl-PrntScr to copy the screen Image to the clipboard, paste it into the Microsoft Paint program, crop it to size, and print it out. Please don't show up without map compass and the skills to use them.
NOTE: Snow and weather conditions may dictate a late change of plans.
