Navigating through the wilderness, without getting lost, is a skill that can save your life...

During this course you'll learn to:

  • read a topographic map;
  • take and follow a bearing in the field;
  • measure and plot a bearing on a map;
  • do map orientation and feature identification related to your surroundings;
  • use a map and compass to determine your location and desired direction of travel;
  • navigate while travelling cross-country through challenging terrain.
    • Eligibility requirements:
      No prior map and compass experience necessary - we'll teach you what you need to know!
      Students ages 14-17 must have parental permission and already be accepted in a Tacoma course requiring Basic Navigation, or be interviewed and accepted by the Navigation Committee Chair or designee.

      Required compass:
      You'll need a "Mountaineers approved" compass which you need to purchase before attending the Workshop.
      Students must use an appropriate compass with adjustable declination (avoid tool free models), transparent base, meridian lines, bezel with 2 degree resolution and a sighting mirror.
      Liquid filled housing is highly recommended.
      Every student must have their own compass; sharing won't work in our class structure.

      Some reliable models include:
      Suunto: MC-2 D/L or MC-2 G/L
      Kasper & Richter: Alpin or Sherpa BW2
      Silva Ranger CL515
      Brunton 15TDCL

      Workshop materials:

      Field trip equipment:
      • A mountaineers approved compass.
      • Sturdy hiking boots.
      • Serious rain gear and extra warm clothing, including hat and gloves.
      • The 10 essentials
      • Your field trip handout (if used will be passed out at the navigation workshop).
      • Lunch, extra food and at least 2 liters of water.
      • Zip lock bags for maps and handouts.
      • Pencil and paper.
      • No cotton clothing. Wear jeans & tennis shoes, and you can expect to be sent home or spend the day in the parking area.

      Students who complete this course will receive a Navigation card valid for 3 years.

      Former graduates are invited to volunteer. The help is much needed and appreciated. Volunteers that help with a both workshops or one field trip will get a one year extension. Those that help with both workshops and the field trip get a three year extension!

Tacoma Basic Nav is two evening workshops (April 17 and 24) and an all-day Saturday, April 27 field trip at Irish Cabin (NW corner Mt. Rainier). Attendance at all three sessions required for graduation; please don't register unless you're sure to attend all three. Navigation Chair Michael Baker will send you a long pre-class email after you register; you should print, read, and keep this email, it contains much information about this course. If you haven't received that email by two weeks before course start date please contact him; he'll send it to you. Pre-class email outlines five things you must do, before the first workshop, to properly prepare. If you come to the first workshop without doing all this you'll start far behind the other students - not recommended! If you have any questions, any at all, please email Nav Chair Michael Baker,

01/01/13 @ 9:00 AM

04/17/13 @ 5:00 PM
