The Alpine Scrambling course teaches essential techniques of off-trail wilderness travel needed for scaling snow and rock summits. Alpine scrambling may at times involve unroped movement on and across low or moderately-exposed snow and rock terrain, but does not include roped climbing on high-angle, seriously-exposed technical rock faces, nor does it involve roped travel on crevassed glaciers.

February 16 or 17: 1/2-day Field Trip at Camp Long in Seattle

March 25 or April 2: Snow Travel and Avalanche Workshop*

April 20 or 21 or May 4 or 5: Full day Snow Travel Field Trip at Stevens Pass**

April 29 or May 7: Rock Travel and Reading Weather Workshop*

May 11 or 12: Rock and Off-trail Travel Field Trip near Leavenworth

June 1 or 2: Experience Field Trip near Cle Elum

* Jan 28, Mar 25, & Apr 29 dates are at the Mountaineers' Seattle Program Center; Feb 5, Apr 2, & May 7 are at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center

** Snow travel field trips are shared with the Basic Alpine Climbing course, and this year registration is under Climbing activities.

Navigation and Alpine First Aid or MOFA (or equivalency) required for graduation. Alpine Scramble students are advised to schedule Navigation in the winter or spring of 2013, and Alpine First Aid at their earliest convenience, if they do not already hold these certifications.
