Leader Notes: 2005 ALPINE SCRAMBLING COURSE
The Everett Mountaineers Alpine Scrambling Course provides instruction on how to travel safely off-trail scramble to mountain summits. Most Northwest mountain summits are accessible by scramble routes. Scrambles are typically strenuous, and usually involve off-trail travel over rock, snow, or brush. The scramble course provides a three-month program of instruction about proper equipment, clothing, navigation and route-finding, avalanche avoidance, weather awareness, rock and off-trail scrambling, wilderness ethics, snow travel, ice axe arrest, and glissade techniques. The course goal is to teach the skills necessary to scramble enjoyably and safely, and with respect for the mountains. The course does not teach technical or roped climbing technique, glacier travel, or the use of crampons. Scramble course graduates who want technical and roped climbing instruction should enroll in the Basic Climbing Course.
Course Prerequisites.
There are no formal prerequisites. However, scrambling requires good physical condition, a positive mental attitude, a significant commitment of time and effort, and a complement of outdoor equipment.
Eligibility.
The course is open to Mountaineers and to the general public, age 16 and over. Non-Members of The Mountaineers, please note that while you may participate in the scrambling course, you are not eligible to graduate from the course and you may not participate in Club scrambles. We strongly encourage you to join The Mountaineers so that you may participate in all of the many club activities. Call 206.284.8484 or 800.573.8484 for membership information.
Course Registration and Enrollment.
Enrollment opens November 1. Enrollment in the scrambling course is on a first-apply, first-accepted basis. The course is limited to 50 students. Applicants who are 16–17 years of age must have parent or guardian permission and complete a supplemental application form (you may request a copy of the supplemental application form from the clubhouse). Enrollment in the scrambling course will close when the course fills or on February 24th, whichever occurs first.
Graduation Requirements.
• Attendance at all scheduled lectures.
• Satisfactory completion of all scheduled field trips.
• Satisfactory completion of three Mountaineer scrambling trips.
• Participation in one day of organized trail or lookout maintenance.
• Satisfactory completion of Mountaineering Oriented First Aid (MOFA).
• Membership in The Mountaineers.
• All of the above requirements must be completed by October 15th of the course year.
• Approval by the Everett Mountaineers Alpine Scrambling Committee. Committee approval is based on each student's ability to safely participate in club scrambles as evidenced by their performance at the field trips and on the required three Mountaineer scrambles.
Course Fees and Refunds.
Tuition is $135 for Mountaineers and $155 for non-members. This tuition cost does not include the scrambling course textbook, membership dues for The Mountaineers, equipment and clothing cost, or tuition for the MOFA course. Refunds are available no later than the end of the orientation, February 24, 2005.
Attendance and Makeup.
Attendance at all lectures and field trips is required to complete the course, so plan accordingly. Only one field trip, and one lecture, may be made up (at another Club branch) — but it is extremely difficult to do because of different schedules at different branches. If you cannot attend all Everett lectures and field trips, we strongly recommend that you wait until another year when you can.

Equipment / Clothing and Costs.
Equipment necessary for the course includes a large day-pack, sturdy mountaineering boots, an ice axe, synthetic or wool outdoor clothing, rain gear, first-aid kit, compass, and various other items. If you do not already have this equipment, please do not purchase it until the equipment and clothing lectures. If you have no equipment and clothing, this course will be expensive. Good mountaineering boots, and inexpensive clothing, backpack and ice axe, will probably cost a minimum of $500; buying quality clothing will increase costs substantially. Some equipment may be rented from various outdoor shops.
Course Textbook.
Course reading assignments are in Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, 7th Edition, published by The Mountaineers. If you do not have access to a copy, you may order a copy at a discounted price by using the scrambling course registration form. The book will be shipped to you prior to the start of the course. You may also purchase a copy at The Mountaineers bookstore in Seattle (either in person or by phone at 206.284.8484 or 800.573.8484), or at various area bookstores.
Mountaineering Oriented First Aid (MOFA).
MOFA is a separate course and is not part of the Alpine Scrambling Course. MOFA is, however, required for graduation from the scrambling course. You will be allowed to participate in the scrambling course without MOFA training, but you must complete MOFA if you wish to graduate from the scrambling course and continue scrambling with The Mountaineers. You may take MOFA through any branch of The Mountaineers. A current adult CPR certification card is required to take the MOFA course. For enrollment information about the Everett Mountaineers MOFA and CPR courses, look in the Go guide in the Everett section. Everett MOFA has limited capacity — enroll early.
