You'll need to get/read the book and buy the required compass BEFORE the classroom session!!!!! Location: Kitsap Cabin, 3153 Seabeck Highway, Bremerton Kitsap Cabin directions: http://kitsapmountaineers.org/directions Location: Gold Mountain, via Gold Creek parking lot, west of Bremerton. NOTE: Field session is open ONLY to those who successfully complete the classroom session. Detailed directions will be provided at the class. NOTE: BEFORE the classroom session, each student MUST PURCHASE AND READ THIS ENTIRE BOOK: : "Wilderness Navigation , Finding Your Way Using Map, Compass, Altimeter and GPS", 2004 (second edition), by Burns and Burns. It is a Mountaineers book, and can be bought online via Amazon.com or by calling the local Barnes and Noble and having it delivered there for pickup. DO NOT DELAY. YOU MUST READ THIS ENTIRE BOOK BEFORE THE CLASS. NOTE: BEFORE THE CLASS, YOU MUST PURCHASE AN ACCEPTABLE COMPASS THAT HAS ADJUSTABLE DECLINATION AND OTHER FEATURES. Go to http://www.mountaineers.org/seattle/navigation and click on the "compass" link at the left side of the web page. This will give you a detailed explanation of the REQUIRED COMPASS FEATURES. There are many costly compasses and even more cheap ones that do not have the required features. Seattle Mountaineers recommends only two compasses: The Brunton 15TDCL Compass as first choice, and the Suunto MC-2 Pro Compass. YOU MUST BRING YOUR BURNS & BURNS BOOK AND YOUR ADJUSTABLE DECLINATION COMPASS, plus paper and pencils, to the classroom session, and to the field session. ********************************************** ********************************************** Field Session is on Saturday February 22, 2014. Meet near the south end of the Gold Creek Trailhead parking lot(near the outhouse) no later than 8 AM on February 22. The field session will involve a number of activities that will test your knowledge of navigation principles. Expect the field session to last until mid-afternoon, so be sure to bring your Ten Essentials. Successful completion of the field session is required in order to earn your Navigation certification. For the field session, you will be travelling rough terrain, including some areas with logging slash covered by brush, including blackberry vines. You'll need appropriate clothing and footwear. Kitsap Climbing students will be covered through their course tuition. All others must make arrangements to pay through the clubhouse.
