Birch Bay & Semiahamoo Birding Hikes

Semiahamoo Bay & Drayton Harbor: up to 2 mi rt. Scenic easy trail (mostly smooth gravel) along the bay & tidal flats offer birding opportunities - bald eagles, peregrine falcons, ospreys, merlins, herons, gulls, terns, dabbling & diving ducks, shorebirds (dunlins, yellowlegs, godwits, etc.), loons, grebes, cormorants, brants, alcids. Directions From I-5 exit #270: W 4 mi on Birch Bay - Lynden Rd, N 1mi on Harbor View Rd, L on Lincoln (becomes Semiahmoo Pkway at Shintaffer Rd) to end to access spit. Directions from Birch Bay: R from Birch Bay Dr at N end of bay onto Shintaffer Rd (3.5mi from intersection of Birch Bay Rd & state park road). At .6mi, follow Semiahmoo sign by turning L onto Semiahmoo Parkway,then proceed as above.
Time & interest permitting, side trips recommended on opposite side of Drayton Harbor: To bluff overlook at Cedar St & Peace Portal Dr, and continue N on Peace Portal Dr to Blaine Marine Park (N at mouth of Drayton Harbor, just S of border) for closer views of species seen at Semiahmoo Spit & shorebirding on incoming tides near base of spit (Semiahmoo side).
Rescheduled from prior weekend to 1/18 for probable dry weather forecast.
Bring binoculars or spotting scope, bird field guide, camera, lunch, water, pack & gear for cool winter weather. Leader will have scope to share. Will return to Everett by late afternoon to early /evening. If adverse weather, trip will be rescheduled to another weekend day in January.
Drive times to Birch Bay/Semiahmoo: approx 1-1/2 hrs from S.Everett or 2 hrs from Seattle.
