Lots of options for distance and elevation gain with the trail system in the Park. Map and understanding of basic navigation recommended for this trip - there are lots of trail junctions. Download map at the bottom of the webpage: http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/five-mile-drive; walk in shade of trees with stops at viewpoints. Rhododendrons blooming in April. Huckleberries in Aug-Sep. A hike through the forest of Pt. Defiance Park to keep us limber during the winter, as well as for testing out gear and clothing. It's good to get in the habit of always having your Ten Essentials in your pack but this trail is urban enough that there is room for more flexibility on that score than there is on a wilderness trail.
