Tacoma Mountaineers Clubhouse

Speaker/Social at Tacoma Mountaineers Clubhouse,2302 N 30th St, Tacoma. At 6:00 we will have a potluck and Tacoma Basic Kayak class student graduation, followed by our special speaker, Ken Campbell. His talk is called "Ikkatsu 2012: Kayaking and Science on the Roadless Coast." “Ikkatsu.” A Japanese word that means “together as one.” As in, “we’re all in this together.” The 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Sendai, Japan, is already having an effect here, on the other side of the world. It’s a big planet, but not as big as we might think. The Ikkatsu Project was three kayakers paddling the roadless coast of the Olympic Peninsula, documenting the debris from the tsunami as it washed ashore on remote Northwest beaches. Working in cooperation with several different scientific organizations, including NOAA and the University of Washington, it was their hope that information gleaned from this adventure would add to our understanding of ocean currents, water-borne pollution and the often mysterious ways that nature and civilization interact. It also promised to be one hell of an adventure. Find out how it turned out...Everyone is invited!
