Activity: Baker Lodge Summer Weekend

Date(s): 09/06/13 - 09/07/13
Leader: Becky Jean Morgan

Leader Notes: Fall at Mt. Baker Lodge offers wonderful hiking on a great variety of trails. Numerous trails are within walking distance or a short drive from the Lodge. Many are suitable for children. Artist Point is just 3 miles away at the end of a paved road, with panoramic views of Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, and the North Cascades. Snow play opportunities usually are abundant through the end of August. Trails usually are completely snow-free by mid-August, giving even inexperienced hikers access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the Pacific Northwest. For a list of trails and trail conditions visit the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest webpage. Under Quick Links click on Road & Trail Conditions then click on Mt. Baker Highway (State Route 542). Summer brings colorful flowers and early fall provides all the above plus fine blueberry picking. Armature astronomers will be at Artist Point with their telescopes at 9:00 pm Saturday, weather dependent. A guest speaker at Heather Meadows Visitor Center will talk about fire prevention at 1:00 pm. If you've visited the Lodge only in winter, or not at all, make your plans now for a special summer or fall treat. A few groups have signed up for specific weekends but their use is not exclusive unless indicated. The lodge is open to Mountaineers club members and the public, with reservations on a first-call basis to the clubhouse (206) 521-6001) or through on line registration. Meals provided include Saturday & Sunday breakfast and Saturday dinner. When you signup please indicate if you have any food allergies. Signup and cancellation deadline is 5pm Wednesday. No refunds after that time. Visit the Baker Lodge website at www.mountaineers.org/bakerlodge for additional information. The lodge usually is open by 7 or 8 on Fridays. Call the hosts if you want a more specific time of opening. Trail lights from the parking lot to the lodge are on until 10:30 each night. Each person should bring a sleeping bag, lunches, personal gear, and a flashlight and/or headlamp plus a towel for the shower. The lodge sleeps 62 dormitory style and operates on a cooperative basis with those staying at the lodge helping in the operation. Drive north on I-5 to Bellingham, and take exit 255, the Mt. Baker Highway. Drive east on SR 542 about 54 miles to the ski area. At the junction in front of the Firs Chalet turn right onto the one-way loop road around Picture Lake. The parking lot for the Mountaineer Lodge is on the right side of the road about 0.3 miles beyond the Firs. Driving time approximately 1 1/2 hours from Bellingham and 3 hours from Seattle depending on traffic.
