Snowshoe tours are rated as Easy, Easy+, Moderate, Strenuous. These ratings are based on the terrain, mileage and elevation gain of a trip. Please note however, that the difficulty level of a trip can be as much a factor of the snow conditions and weather as the amount of gain or distance.

Tours are always added to the web site after the publication of the Go Guide. so check here frequently for the latest updates. Click here for an explanation of how to read tour listings.

 Easy
0 - 500 ft. elevation gain, maximum 6 miles round-trip. Open to all properly equipped members of the Mountaineers.

 Easy +
500 - 2,000 ft elevation gain, maximum 10 miles round trip. NO ice axe required due to the terrain and minimal avalanche danger. Must be a graduate of the Snowshoe Lite, Snowshoe & Winter Travel, Alpine Scrambling or Basic Climb courses.

 Moderate
500 - 2,000 ft. elevation gain, maximum 10 miles round-trip. Ice ax required. Must be Snowshoeing (Winter Travel or Winter Skills) student or graduate, or Alpine Scrambling or Basic Climbing course graduate. Snowshoe students must have completed the field trip prior to sign-up.

 Strenuous

Must be Snowshoeing Wintr Travel or Winter Skills) student or graduate or Alpine Scrambling or Basic Climbing course graduate. Snowshoe students must have completed the field trip prior to sign-up.

 Instructional
Leader will provide instruction on mountaineering technique during the tour. Excellent for students, or those looking to polish skills.

Required equipment
Snowshoes are required on all tours, although snow conditions may not necessitate their use. Crampons, snow shovels and avalanche transceivers may be required by the leader and will be noted in tour listings. The Ten Essentials and wool or synthetic pile clothing are required on all trips. People who are not properly equipped will not be allowed to go. All drivers must carry tire chains and a snow shovel. Remember that carpooling can't work without people willing to drive.

Waiting list
If a tour is full, you may put your name on a waiting list. You can only be on one waiting list for any particular date. It is your responsibility to call the clubhouse by Thursday to find out whether or not you've made the list - or you may check online. Late cancellations do occur. After 5pm Thursday, to find out if there is space on a tour, or if you do not intend to go even if still on the waitlist, contact the leader directly, preferably by phone if time is short.

No show
Persons who fail to show without notifying the leader may not be allowed to sign up for tours for the remainder of the season.

Course Tour requirements
How Graduation Credit Is Determined for Snowshoe Backcountry Course Tours

In order to graduate, students must participate in at least three tours, and on each they must successfully negotiate the terrain with satisfactory technique. These tours must have been listed on the Web site for the Seattle branch. While the rating listed in the tour notice is an indication of the credit that may be awarded, ultimately the determination is made by the trip leader as part of his or her trip report afterwards. If no significant snow travel was involved, the leader will not have been able to assess a student's snow travel credit, regardless of what the pre-tour notice says. Reaching the destination via a trail route with no snow, or insufficient snow, does not qualify for any credit. Such a trip would therefore be a trail trip and should be led by one of the Mountaineers Hiking Activity committees.

NOTE HOWEVER : unlike the graduation requirement for a Climb or Scramble, reaching the destination is NOT required,
so long as an equivalent or adequate effort was expended !
