SEATTLE BRANCH SNOWSHOE COURSES  -  2012


The Snowshoe Basic Course
is designed for Mountaineer members & Non-members age 14 and up who want a solid introduction to snowshoeing skills without the commitment of a full, multi-module course. In one evening lecture and one weekend day outing, students learn to travel safely on snowshoes in easy terrain, select and use proper equipment and clothing, where to go, what to rent, and how to choose the right outing for their skill levels.  

Course dates: Two separate courses offered :

Field Trip: Sat or Sun, Jan. 14 or 15  (MLK weekend)

Course Fee: $55 for Mountaineer members; $75 for nonmembers.

The Snowshoe Backcountry Skills Course is designed for Mountaineer members only who have graduated from Snowshoe Basic (formerly known as Snowshoe Lite) or have equivalent experience, and want to learn to travel safely on snowshoes in moderate and strenuous terrain where necessary skills include identifying avalanche hazards, using an ice axe, and building emergency shelters. The course offers one evening lecture and one weekend day outing.  After course completion, graduates will be eligible to participate in more strenuous club snowshoe tours with confidence.

Course dates: Lecture:  Wed. Feb 1, 7-9:30pm.

Field Trip: Sat, Feb 4, 8 am at Snoqualmie Pass

Course Fee: $65; Mountaineer members only.

Winter Camping Course is designed for Mountaineer members who want to make the most of winter by knowing how to camp overnight in the snow and how to avoid survival situations. Learn to camp safely and comfortably in snow, and use survival skills to spend the night even in severe weather. Students learn to identify safe campsites, build snow shelters, stay overnight in a snow cave, stay warm and dry, and have fun.

Course dates: Lecture:  Wed. Feb 15, 7-9:30pm

Field Trip: One full weekend, Sat. and Sun., Feb 25-26, location TBD

Course Fee: $60; Mountaineer members only.
