UPDATED October 15, 2008
There are two
general snowshoe courses, Snowshoe Lite, and Snowshoe.
Additionally, the Winter Camping course is offered this season.
Snowshoe Lite
The Snowshoe
Lite course is an introduction to safe and enjoyable winter travel for
the beginner. It is designed for people who want to get a taste of
snowshoeing and pick up a few good skills without the commitment of a
full course. Topics of instruction will include selection and use of
proper equipment, conditioning, where to go, what to rent, winter
travel, safety, and choosing an outing. Students will be eligible to
participate in easy snowshoe tours with the confidence of having a
foundation in winter travel.
This course is open to
non-members.
Snowshoe
To take this
class, you must be a
graduate of the Snowshoe Lite course or have equivalent
experience.
The Snowshoe
Course offers instruction in safe and enjoyable alpine wilderness
travel techniques for the Pacific Northwest
winter environment. Topics of instruction include: selection &
maintenance of proper equipment, conditioning, snow travel and ice axe
usage, navigation & route finding, winter hazards, and avalanche
safety & rescue. Students develop skills for participating in
moderate or strenuous snowshoe tours with alpine lakes or non-technical
summits as destinations.
This course, for members only,
is offered as a
modular update option to the Snowshoe Lite course.
Winter Camping
To take this
class, you must be a Snowshoe student, or a
graduate of any of the following courses: Alpine Scrambling, Basic
Climbing, Snowshoe or Backcountry Ski. Learn to dig a snow cave, build
an igloo, pitch a tent, and create a comfortable camp in the
snow. Go on the "Tour de Caves" and admire the creativity of your
friends and fellow students. Come with us and learn what a warm
and pleasant experience winter camping can be!
This course is open to
