Open
To:
Alpine
Scrambles are open to Mountaineers members
who are Scrambling students or graduates,
Basic & Intermediate Climbing
graduates, and Scrambling and Basic
Climbing equivalents.
Winter Scrambles are open only
to graduates/equivalents of the above - no
students. It is recommended that you take
the Advanced Course Winter module, unless
you have taken the Snowshoe Course or
module, or other equivalent winter
emergency training.
NOTE however, that WS 'conditions'
can occur anytime in the regular
season also - especially in October and
April.
Signing
Up:
Use the
Club online system FOR ALL TRIPS unless
otherwise noted in the trip notice.
You may also telephone the Club for this
purpose. The club signup line is
206-521-6001.
Online signup procedure
:
Click 'M' logo upper left. After getting the
general Mountaineers home page, log in. After
you have logged in, to find our trips, click on
the 'Explore' button, and hit 'Alpine
Scrambling' on the dropdown menu.
Now select 'Seattle' in the Branch box, and
change the default dates (usually the next 31
days) if necessary. Then click on the 'Search'
button.
Finally click 'Register' on the event you want,
and follow along with that signup.
Waiting
List:
If the trip
is full, you may choose to place your name
on the wait list. You may check your
status any time online, or telephone the
club by 4:30 pm the weekday before the
trip date for any changes in your position
on the list. Telephone the leader if
the club is closed and/or the trip signup
final date has passed. REMEMBER that if
you wait-listed yourself; you MUST cancel
with the club and/or the leader if you
decide not to stay on the waitlist.
Carpooling:
Check online
or telephone the club after 1 p.m. the
weekday before the trip date for your
carpool assignment, (Friday for a weekend
trip). Each rider will pay a mileage
fee to the driver - see the main web site
or the Go Guide for the current
rate. Driver and riders will pay
their share of tolls or other fees.
Cancellations:
Cancel
online or telephone the club no later than
2 weekdays before the trip date.
After that you MUST telephone the trip
leader, EVEN if you are on the waitlist,
as well as your carpool driver or
riders. Riders who do not cancel
with their assigned driver will still owe
the carpooling fee to the
driver. If you fail to show up for a
trip without cancelling, you may not be
permitted to take part in any more club
trips.
Trip
Classifications:
Trips are
often classified by type: S=snow, R=rock,
O=other. They are also classified by
strenuousness on a 1-5 scale, and on
technical difficulty/exposure, also a 1-5
scale. Hence, a rating of SR 5-3
means a trip involving both snow and rock,
exceptionally strenuous, and with an
average amount of technical
difficulty/exposure.
These
ratings assume optimal conditions and may
be affected by weather.
Exploratory:
These are
trips that attempt to locate a new
scrambling route. Party limit is
6. NOT OPEN TO STUDENTS.
Maps:
7.5 minute
quadrangles, unless otherwise stated in
the trip notice.
Equipment:
In addition
to the 10 essentials, ice axes will be
brought to the trailhead by ALL party
members on ALL scrambling trips.
Additional gear may be required as stated
in the trip notice or as notified by the
leader.
Students must bring helmets - and are
recommended for all.
Party
Limit:
12 members,
unless otherwise stated in the trip
notice.
Road
and Trail Conditions:
Trips are
subject to change by the leader, due to
road / trail damage or closures.
Additional Trip Types
Take note of
three “special” types of skill-oriented
scrambles you may see scheduled:
STUDENT Scrambles are
reserved INITIALLY for students, in which
time will be allowed to practice scramble
skills. At close of sign-up, grads who
have signed up will be allowed on the trip
up to the trip limit; then further
sign-ups with the leader are first come
first served as normal.
NOTE that students are therefore given
preference despite sign-up position, up to
the trip close date. This is somewhat
similar to waitlisting - therefore make
sure you call the Clubhouse to verify your
status.
INSTRUCTIONALScrambles are
similar, except they are open to students
or grads alike looking for an opportunity
to hone their skills. Summits achieved on
either type of “skills scrambles” will
still count toward graduation!
WINTER
Scrambles are no longer scheduled by the
Snowshoe Committee. There is information
elsewhere on this web site & in the Go
Guide regarding the qualifications for
leading & participating in these
trips.
