Basic Crewing Course - Seattle The Seattle Branch Sailing committee offers a yearly basic crewing course to teach members how to sail and participate as a safe, reliable crew member. The course will begin on the evening of Wednesday, April 6, 2011 and continue Wednesday evenings April 13, 27, and May 4 -- please note that the class will skip a week between the second and third classes. Students will sign up for one session of on-the-dock training on boats located at one of the marinas in the area (Elliott bay, Shilshole, Lake Union, Edmonds, Everett and West Seattle). Students can select the session which best suits their time and location preferences. These sessions will be held the week of April 20. Register for on-the-dock sessions at the first class session on April 6. Members can sign up for the crewing course on The Mountaineers activity search page. Enrollment will close April 5. After completion of the course, you should: Be able to rig a basic sloop-rigged sailboat Be able to assist in departing from and arriving at a dock under power Have a basic understanding of sail trim and sailboat maneuvering Understand basic personal gear requirements and safety practices for sailing under conditions which may be encountered during Mountaineer sails Have a basic understanding of charts and navigation aids Be able to function as a crewmember during a sail.
