2012-Sept. 17 Mon. - Japanese Garden Visit. This day in Japanese culture is regarded as Respect for Elders Day, and the Japanese Garden in the UW Arboretum is offering free entry for seniors between 10 am and 2 pm. We will meet at the entrance gate at 10:00 am. Leader is Muriel Stoker. No sign-up required.

2012-Aug. 28, Tue. - West Seattle Walk We will go to West Seattle by water taxi next Tuesday, August 28, leaving from Pier 50 on the 10:30 taxi - so meet at 10:15 on pier. Fare for seniors is $1.75 each way - orca card or cash. It is a 15 minute trip - would walk to Jack Block park in West Seattle and back to dock for lunch at cafe there. 2012-Aug. 21, Tue. - Bainbridge Island walk around waterfront trail - then through town (formerly Winslow) with lunch at Blackbird Bakery. Meet at Pier 52 near the walk-on ticket office by 10:15 to make 10:40 ferry. Plan to return on 2:05 ferry. Round trip fare is $3.85 for walk-on seniors. Ferry ride is 35 minutes. 2012-July 18, Wed. - Beacon Hill area from Jefferson Comm. Ctr 3801 Beacon Ave. So. (Metro #36). Meet at 10 a.m. for a 4 mi RT walk to a loop trail near Columbian Way and return to a walk in the new park over the reservoir, for lovely views of Seattle and waterfront. 2012-July 10, Tue. - Annual Picnic 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are saving money this year by using Magnusson Park, without a shelter reservation. Bring a folding chair if you can, along with your sack lunch. Also, bring finger food to share (optional). We will meet at the picnic area at the east end of NE 65th Street. Closest Metro stop is Sand Point Way and NE 65th St. (Routes 75 and 30). We will meet buses from 10:50 to 12:00 if you have pre-arranged by phoning 425-898-4468, or phone 206-227-7362 on arrival.

2012-June 26, Tue. - Bloedel Reserve, Bainbridge Island 2-1/2 hour, 2-mile, guided walking tour of world-renowned public garden, beginning at 10:30 a.m. ($9 Sr/$13 Others). We will take the 9:35 a.m. ferry and should get in line 15 min. early. Walk-ons or car passengers: round trip fare ($3.85 Sr/$7.70 Others). We will all meet at front of ferry on main deck. For riders, Seattle north-end and south-end carpools will be arranged if possible. Car and driver fares each way: $14.45 Sr/$16.40 Others. Wear sturdy walking shoes. Take a left upon entering the Park. We’ll do 3 mi in Seward Park then Carpool to Kubota Garden, 9817 55th Ave S.(Renton Ave S. and 55 Ave S.) and walk 1 mi through Kubota Garden. Then we'll walk to nearby Lake View Cemetery, where the cherry trees should be in bloom. This historic cemetery is the burial site of many early settlers. 2012-Mar. 16, Fri. - Seattle Aquarium and Waterfront. 10 a.m. Meet at the entrance to the Aquarium, 1483 Alaskan Way, Pier 59. By bus: From downtown, walk down the Pike Street Hillclimb via the Pike Place Market. Metro #99 travels north on First Avenue to Broad Street, then south along the Waterfront where it stops in front of the Aquarium. Four-hour metered parking is available along the waterfront and underneath the viaduct. Republic Parking Hillclimb Garage and the Pike Place Market Parking Garage are also located across the street from the Aquarium. 2011--Dec. 13, Tue. - Holiday Potluck and Social Meeting. 11 a.m. at club headquarters. Leave your brown bag home this month. Instead bring a favorite dish to share at this Retired Rovers' traditional holiday potluck. Food always tastes better when eaten with good friends and seasoned with good conversation. This is a social day with a musical program. Paper plates, cups, coffee, tea, utensils and napkins will be provided. 2011--Dec. 6, Tue - North Creek Trail from McCollum Park to Mill Creek. 2.5 mi one way, paved path, 100' elevation gain. Meet at 10 a.m. at WSU County Extension office in McCollum Park. Directions: I-5 to Snohomish County, Exit 186, go east on 128th St. SE about 1/2 mile, then turn right into McCollum Park, and wind your way past Swimming Pool to WSU Extension. A short walk through WSU Demo Rain Garden will be led by staff-member Philomena Kedziorski. Bring lunch or buy in Mill Creek (soup $3.00). 2011--Nov. 2, Wed. - West Seattle's Jack Block Park via the water taxi. Meet at Pier 50 by 10:15 a.m. to take 10:30 water taxi to W. Seattle, at about 10:45 (Seniors $1.50 each way). Alternatively: meet us at the W. Seattle water taxi dock (1660 Harbor Ave SW) at 10:45. From the dock we will walk about a mile to Jack Block Park for a wonderful view of downtown. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Issaquah Trails Ctr: take I-90 to Exit 17, go S. on Front St., then Left on Bush St. for one block to park on street by the Trails Ctr. Muriel Stoker will give a program on a trip she took with Edlerhostel to Peru. It covers some pre-Columbian cultures as well as a visit to Machu Picchu. Photos were taken by another member of the group and they are excellent. So come to enjoy lunch with your friends, and meet new ones.

2011--Sept. 27, Tue. - Colman Park area.(approx. 4 miles) Meet at 10 a.m. at Colman Park Parking Area, just south of I-90 bridge, and just south of the intersection of Lakeside Ave. S and S. Lake Washington Blvd. (or take metro #27 to Day St. and walk south). We will walk through tunnels in Colman Park and then up to the I-90 bridge overlook park. From there we will go the through bicycle tunnel to Sam Smith Park. Bring bag lunch and drink for picnic along the way. We will return to Colman Park. No registration. 2011--Sept. 19, Mon. - Discovery Park at Low Tide. Meet 2:00 p.m at park's East entrance, Learning Center parking lot, 3801 Discovery Park Blvd. (which is an extension of Gilman Ave. W.). After exploring trails and beach and returning to the Learning Center, leader will provide early dinner at her nearby condo. Sign-up required; call Cecilia Saari.

Barbara Chodokauskas will show a DVD on some Polish history that many of us know little about. At the beginning of WWII hundreds of thousands of Polish people, including Barbara and her family, were forcibly relocated to camps in Siberia by the Russians.

We will walk up the hill to the center of the park where there is still some old growth forest. Then we will join the level trail that goes arount the edge of the park with great views all around Lake Washington. Bring a bag lunch and drink and we will picnic along the way. 2011--Aug. 25, Thu. - Chambers Bay Golf Course Trail (So. Tacoma) 3 miles (E). Meet at 11:00 a.m. at the Environmental Services Bldg at 9850 64th St.W. Our route will loop around this beautiful site overlooking The Narrows, Fox Island, McNeil Island Prison, and the Olympic Mountains. You may bring lunch or opt for the golf club restaurant. Take I-5 Exit #130 to 56th St; West on 56th St to Orchard, where it becomes Cirque Dr., continue on curving Cirque Dr. west to the Sound. Turn left (south) on Grandview to the Environmental Bldg. 2011--Aug. 21, Sun. - Forest Theatre, "Into the Woods" We will visit the Kitsap Forest Theater to see a production of the James Lupine/Stephen Sondheim musical, "Into The Woods." Tickets are $14.00 and showtime is 2 P.M. Carpooling will be via the Bremerton ferry. There are picnic areas and also refreshments available for purchase. This is an outdoor theater with a 10 minute walk from the parking or picnic area. You may want to bring a cushion or stadium-style folding chair. 2011--July 25, Mon. - Carkeek Park Art Walk (E) 3.5 mi 500' gain. Meet at NW 100th Place and 6th Ave NW (Metro #28 and #75) at 10:30 a.m. bring lunch. Seattle's Carkeek Park is hosting the 3rd annual Heaven and Earth exhibition of outdoor art work--focusing on interpretations of the natural environment in a world of dynamic change, including approximately 15 art works scattered throughout the park. We will walk at a leisurely pace, pausing to view each individual work, and stopping for lunch approximately half way through the walk. 2011--July 7, Thu. Bainbridge Island and Waterfront trail (E) 3 miles. Meet at ferry dock - Pier 52- no later than 10:30 a.m. We will take the 10:40 ferry to Bainbridge - 35 minutes-senior fare $3.55. Free return. The walk will take us along the Waterfront Trail and into and around town. Lunch at one of many eating places along the way or bring a bag lunch. Plan to return to Seattle on the 2:05 p.m. ferry. 2010--July 30 to Aug. 6, Friday to Friday - Retired Rovers 21st Summer Outing at Mt. Baker Lodge. Enjoy myriad hikes in a beautiful alpine setting. The lodge has comfortable sleeping and indoor plumbing. and tasty meals by our Magic Chefs, Donna Osseward and Evelyn Lester. Cost per day is not finalized but will be approximately $38 for members, $46 for guests and $42 for guest children under age fourteen. All Mountaineer members are welcome. 2010--July 22 Thu. - West Seattle's Jack Block Park via the water taxi. Meet at Pier 50 (note new departure location) by 10:15 a.m. to take 10:30 water taxi to West Seattle, arriving there about 10:45 (senior fare is $1.50 each way). From the dock we will walk about a mile to Jack Block Park for a wonderful view of downtown. Then we will walk back to dock for lunch (buy/bring). 2009--Dec. 8, Tue. - Holiday Potluck and Social Meeting. 11 a.m. at club headquarters. Leave your brown bag home this month. Instead bring a favorite dish to share at this Retired Rovers' traditional holiday potluck. Food always tastes better when eaten with good friends and seasoned with good conversation. This is a social day with a musical program. Paper plates, cups, coffee, tea, utensils and napkins will be provided. We would like all of our old friends to be there, so if you need transportation there are volunteers in many areas that may be able to pick you up. 2009--Dec. 1, Tue. - Bellevue Botanical Garden. 10:30 a.m. Meet at the garden's Visitor Center at 12001 Main St. After garden tour, we will carpool to stroll Bellevue's 24 acre Downtown Park with waterfall and half-mile Promenade.
