Photographer:

Julian Sayers

After graduating from Kansas State University with a degree in architecture and serving in the U.S. Navy, I moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, where I received a master’s degree in urban planning. A professional career spanning three decades has included service as a city-planning director and as a planning consultant.

A serious interest in photography began seven years ago with an extended sailing vacation into Canada, followed by several months of self-directed study which led to my “discovery” of The Mountaineers photography activities. Both my technical skills and creative vision flourished under The Mountaineers spirit of camaraderie and opportunities for learning in a supportive setting. Over the past several years it has been rewarding to see the progress of others advance through our programs to become award-winning photographers, and even budding professionals.

Photography fulfills several needs for me. It provides a counterbalance to a stressful professional career. It’s a common denominator that encompasses interests ranging from sailing and vintage sports cars to glass art, travel, nature and various sports. It is also an outlet for my interest in design and natural curiosity to see the nature of things in the physical world…..It’s also a heck of a lot of fun!

Special Places: The five accompanying images are scenes from nature, taken at locations that have a special beauty. All are the result of photo trips sponsored by The Mountaineers Photography Committee.
