Photographer:

Joan Loeken

During the past 17 years of study and photographing, I have used my eye and my camera's eye to deepen my appreciation of humanity and our relationship to the natural world. I have been fortunate to travel to many parts of the world to document what I see, experiences that have enriched my life.

Professionally I received my Master's Degree in Social Work in 1964 and am a clinical social worker in private practice. Photography began as a hobby for me and has grown to a part-time business. In addition to displaying prints, I have created fade-dissolve slide shows to music as a way of sharing the beauty of the world around us.

Nova Scotia: In the fall of 1999 I spent a week along the coast of Nova Scotia with Rocky Mountain School of Photography. I was struck by the natural beauty of the rugged coastline and awed by the seafaring way of life. The people of Nova Scotia are warm and welcoming, and have a strong connection to the sea. I felt honored to be able to capture some of the beauty of their world and their way of life.
