2008 Basic Photography Course

This four week class includes Thursday evening lectures, optional Saturday half-day classroom workshops featuring "Getting to Know Your Camera," "Digital Photography Techniques," and "Close-Up Photography" and a class notebook. There are also optional half-day weekend field workshops, which give students hands-on experience relating to the course topics and provide opportunities for individual instrucion. A final Saturday session will combine a potluck, a review of students images by a team of photographers, and a sharing of student work.

March 6, 13, 20, 27, 2008 and the weekends of March 8, 15, 22, 29, 2008.

  • Demystifying your camera
    • How to select equipment
    • Digital vs Film
    • Which lens to use and why
    • Understanding your light meter
  • Understanding exposure
    • The photographic triangle
    • Discovering the directions of light
    • The qualities of light
    • Exposure compensation in difficult situations
  • Exploring composition
    • Where to place your subject and why
    • Understanding and using depth of field
    • Principles of lines and shapes
    • Using color to evoke emotion
    • Simplifying your images
    • Creating images with impact
    • How to use patterns and textures
  • Taking photography into the field
Also provided are creative exercises, practice tips and advanced techniques to allow the student to progress after the class has ended.

Courses meet at the Mountaineer building; 300 Third Ave. W, Seattle, WA

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for socializing and exhibits. All evenings are from 7:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
