Course Requirements

Students must be in reasonable physical condition and capable of going off-trail in rugged terrain. In addition to the 10-essentials, heavy-duty hiking or mountaineering boots, raingear and synthetic clothing are required. Students will need "Wilderness Navigation" by Burns & Burns (available in the Mountaineers bookstore), USGS Mt Baring and USGS Index topographic maps. A quality compass with adjustable declination is required but will not be needed until the first workshop - see the compass page for details.

If you do not have a compass DO NOT purchase one until you understand the requirements. If you get the wrong compass, you will just have to get another or exchange it.

Wilderness Navigation by Burns & Burns (about $10), or the 2nd edition (about $12)- available at the Mountaineers Bookstore, the Mountaineers Books on-line, REI and other locations.

What to bring to the Navigation Workshop at the clubhouse

Students must bring the following:

  1. A suitable compass (meeting the compass requirements)
  2. USGS Mt Baring 7.5' topographic map
  3. USGS Index 7.5' topographic map
  4. Pencils & paper
  5. A working familiarity with the Wilderness Navigation book -- read it before the first workshop (we really mean it)

You must sign up for three separate items:

  1. the Navigation Course - Seattle (payment)
  2. the specific workshop you will attend
  3. the specific field trip you will attend

You can sign up online (strongly recommended), or with the clubhouse, either by mailing in a registration form or calling member services at 206-284-8484. If there is an issue with your dates, please contact member services by telephone. For most people, selecting your preferred dates on-line will be sufficient.

What to bring to the Heybrook Ridge field trip

Details will be discussed during the workshop, but include:

  • 10 essentials
  • Heavy duty hiking or mountaineering boots (really good ankle support - you will need it)
  • Serious rain gear and extra warm clothing, including hats and gloves
  • Both topographic maps described above
  • Your field trip handout (passed out at the navigation workshop)
  • Lunch, extra food and at least 2 liters of water
  • Zip lock bags for maps and handouts
  • Pencils and paper
  • No cotton clothing - wear jeans, and you can expect to be sent home

You must sign up for a specific field trip date online (or with the clubhouse). Do not show up unless you have signed-up/registered for that particular field trip. Carpooling is required on this field trip - no exceptions (you can either ride or drive). Parking space is extremely limited. Specify your carpooling preferences when signing up for the field trip. Carpooling is REQUIRED in all but exceptional circumstances (ask the field trip coordinator for permission if you have such a need).
