About the Naturalists

The Mountaineers' Naturalists purpose is to provide trail trips, which include, but are not limited to, some aspect of botany, geology, or ornithology. We attract folks who are interested in the natural world encountered along trails from sea to mountains. Our group is more interested in the journey and what it has to offer along the way.

Naturalist trips provide opportunities to observe, study and enjoy nature. The trip emphasis may vary: flowers, birds, geology or any other aspect of the surroundings. Leaders may be knowledgeable or may rely on the pooled knowledge of the group.

Sign up through club headquarters or online unless otherwise indicated. The Naturalists follow the procedures listed in "Sending you on your way" on pg. 1 of the Go Guide.

Please see the Hiking preamble for trip classification and participant requirements. Unless otherwise indicated, participants are expected to wear boots and clothing appropriate for the trip. Bring the ten essentials and be prepared for the level of the activity.

Naturalist trips and outings are not suitable for children.

The Naturalist Committee is comprised of a majority of our trip leaders. We meet quarterly to schedule trips and have open discussion on problems and successes arising from the trips we lead. The Naturalists are currently chaired by Dave Shema, david.shema@gmail.com
