Cliff Notes Guidelines
 Updated October 2006

Mission

The mission of Cliff Notes is to be an edited, permanent record of mountaineering activities for and by members of the Seattle Mountaineers climbing program. The newsletter is published by volunteers from the Seattle Branch Climbing Committee.

Scope

Cliff Notes covers all aspects of mountaineering that would be of interest to club members engaged in the Seattle Mountaineers climbing program. New route reports, historical articles, profiles of interesting people, techniques, and land use and access issues are all appropriate topics for the newsletter. Also welcome are pieces that capture the spirit of climbing (see Gary Yngve’s story in the Spring 2006 issue for an example).

Schedule

Cliff Notes is published three times a year on the following schedule:
Winter – submission deadline: January 1
     Spring/Summer – submission deadline: May 1
Fall – submission deadline: October 1

Audience

The Cliff Notes audience includes new Basic Climbing course students, Intermediate Climbing course students and graduates, and experienced climb leaders. More than half are experienced climbers with several seasons of climbing experience. Articles should therefore take on the tone of talking or sharing climbing related topics with peers.

Content

Each issue of Cliff Notes includes a mix of full-length articles and short features. Editorial contributions are always welcomed! If you have a story idea but are uncertain how to proceed with it, see if it fits one of the regular categories below. If not, submit it to the editors for approval or assistance.
  • Climbing routes: personal stories and beta on climbing routes; new, lesser-known and unusual stories are preferred (~1000 words)
  • Mountaineering related features: Anything related to climbing and of interest to Seattle-branch Mountaineers climbers (~1,000 words)
  • Shorts: Brief climbing trip reports (100-200 words ea.)
  • Climber profile: usually a profile of a Mountaineer climber, not necessarily a leader (500-750 words)
  • Climbing 101: tips and techniques for new climbers, things you wish someone had told you when you were a Basic Student (500 words)
  • Climbing 201: beyond the basics, more intermediate/advanced techniques (500 words)
  • Climbing 301: issues related to climb leadership (500 words)
  • Gear: reviews of the latest gear, care/repair tips for existing gear, etc. (500 words)
  • Health corner: Climbing is hard on the body, tips and ideas for keeping healthy (300-500 words)
  • Parting shot: picture(s) related to mountaineering (caption only)
  • Pro-tips: Interesting ideas that should be shared, but don’t rate a full article (50-100 words)
Please submit articles in Word (.doc) or Rich Text (.rtf) formats via email to carry@nwoutdoorgrrl.com.

Photography / Illustration

Stories with relevant photographs, illustrations, topos and/or maps are preferred. Great pictures of people in action are most engaging to our audience, and we love to see them. We also like jaw-dropping scenery pictures.

We accept high-resolution digital images (preferred), black and white photographs and color prints.

Please submit high resolution digital pictures in jpeg or tiff formats as attachments when sending by e-mail to carry@nwoutdoorgrrl.com. If the collection of images is larger than 3mb, please copy them to a compact disk and send it by regular post or copy it to a Web site and email the editor a link. Please do not supply them as pictures pasted into an attached Word document.

Instructions before mailing CDs or prints are available by emailing the editor. When sending a print or a slide, please include your name and address. While the editor will handle all photographic submissions with the utmost care, neither she nor the Mountaineers will compensate photographers for any loss or damage that might occur to original, hard-copy photographs. Therefore, submission of digital copies is recommended.

Editing

We reserve the right to edit submitted material for grammar, spelling, readability and length.
