Graduates of the Basic Course (and Basic Equivalents) may now sign up at the same time as basic students for basic course climbs. For many years, basic grads had to wait an extra week. No more! Let’s see you out there!

And don’t anyone forget about Club Climbs! We have some exciting club climbs scheduled:
• For Basic Grads - Constance, Spickard & Redoubt, Fisher Chimneys on Shuksan, Logan, Black Peak, Temple & High Priest in the Enchantments.
• For Intermediates: don’t miss Bonanza, rock in the Enchantments or ice climbs on Baker, Adams, Shuksan and Maude.
See Upcoming “Go Guides” for details.

Climb categories can be confusing. Who is eligible for what in the Seattle Branch climbs?
• Basic Course Climbs - Basic Student/Grad/Equivalent, Rope Leader
• Intermediate Course Climbs - Intermediate Student/Grad
• Crag Course Climbs - Crag Student/Grad, Intermediate Student/Grad
• Club Climbs
  • Basic Level - Basic Grad/Equivalent, Rope Leader
  • Intermediate Level - same as Intermediate Course Climbs
  • Crag Level - same as Crag Course Climbs
Prerequisites further determine a student’s eligibility for particular climb types. A Rope Leader is usually an Intermediate Student. Of course, climbers are always welcome on climbs in roles requiring less than their experience level. For example, a Climb Leader may choose to be a regular participant rather than lead a climb.

What problem was addressed by the change for Basic Grads? We want Basic Grads who do not immediately become Intermediate Students to be able to continue to climb with the Mountaineers. This was not happening. The Climb Committee dropped the one week delay to encourage participation by basic grads. Because of recently instituted “Reserved Climbs”, “Mentor Group Climbs” and “Express Climbs”, we feel (hope, wish….) that removing the one week delay will have little impact on Basic Students while encouraging a few more Grads to stick around. We will monitor the effect of this change.
