Basic Alpine Climbing Course — Seattle Branch
 

The Seattle Branch Basic Alpine Climbing Course has undergone substantial changes again this year, and scheduling is currently under development. In general the course meetings and field trips will run from mid January through spring, with climbs scheduled throughout the summer, and graduation in the fall. A full schedule will be posted here when available.

The Basic Alpine Climbing Course is an intensive and thorough program in training to become a competent climbing partner on technical rock, snow, and glacier climbs in the Pacific Northwest. Included skills taught and experiences had are belaying and rope handling, rappelling, 5th class rock climbing, snow/glacier climbing, basic technical rescue, 1st aid & map & compass (separate programs and prices), back-country camping including snow camping, emergency survival skills, guidance on gear purchases and conditioning, basic risk assessment, weather, avalanche assessment, and more. Participants are trained to become solid and competent participants in the realm of alpine climbing on rock and glacier summits in the PNW.

Scheduled class meetings at the clubhouse at Magnuson Park:
- Thu, Jan 14 – 7:00-9:00 pm
- Fri, Mar 5 – 7:00-9:00 pm

Field Trips:
- Jan. 12, 13, or 16 (Tue, Wed, or Sat) – Knots
- Feb 6, 7, 20, or 21 (Sat or Sun) – Rappel, Belay, and Prusik
- Mar 9, 10, or 14 (Tue, Wed, Sun) – Belay Escape
- Apr 10, 11, 24 or 25 (Sat or Sun) – Rock skills evaluation
- Apr 24, 25, May 1, or May 9 (Sat or Sun) – Snow Travel Skills

Course Fee: $400.00

There are no refunds beyond the first lecture.

This is a member's only program; you must be a member of The Mountaineers before registering for the course.

2010 Course Full. Sign up for the Seattle Branch 2011 course in the Fall of 2010. Check with other branches of the Mountaineers for their scheduled offerings.
