Alpine Scrambling bridges the gap between hiking and technical mountaineering, taking the adventurous person high and off the beaten path on Cascade and Olympic peaks. Many challenging and beautiful summits in these ranges are accessible to alpine scramblers.

Scrambling covers third-class terrain on routes which may cross steep rock or snowfields, but require no safety rope. The Mountaineers offers both winter and summer scrambles (the former on snowshoes), as well as a course for beginners that teaches simple rock scrambling, ice-ax arrest and other essential skills. The Alpine Scrambling Course can be a valuable preparation for the Basic Climbing Course, though it's not a prerequisite. Registration generally starts in December for branches that offer a scrambling course.

You must complete the Alpine Scrambling Course (or the Basic Climbing Course) to be eligible to go on scramble outings offered by The Mountaineers. Graduation also qualifies you for snowshoe trips. If you feel that you have the requisite experience, you can also apply for "equivalency" in the scrambling program. Please contact the program center for more information.

In general, to complete any of our scrambling courses you will need to attend all lectures and field trips, complete a first aid course and, in Seattle and Tacoma, complete a separate navigation course.
