What good is a ten essential without the knowledge of how to use it? Anyone who wishes to travel safely in wilderness areas should have a basic understanding of navigation, using a map and compass. The Mountaineers provides exceptional training in these skills through its navigation program and workshops, an integral component for many of our bread-and-butter programs such as basic climbing and alpine scrambling. Using navigation tools, the backcountry traveler can route-find, plan trips and get back on route after the occasional wrong turn.

Navigation workshops are offered in the spring and fall, and are open to members and non-members. Students in the Alpine Scrambling and Basic Climbing courses are required to complete the navigation course as part of their curriculum.
