The Ten Essentials
The Mountaineers recommends that you have all of the Ten Essentials with you on every trip.
1. Navigation (map and compass)
2. Sun protection
3. Insulation (extra clothing)
4. Illumination (flashlight/headlamp)
5. First-aid supplies
6. Fire
7. Repair kit and tools
8. Nutrition (extra food)
9. Hydration (extra water)
10. Emergency shelter
This is where it all starts for many Mountaineers. The Mountaineers' most popular activity, hikes are offered year-round, rain or shine. These easy-to-strenuous day trips take members to the Cascades, Olympics and sometimes Eastern Washington. No matter the month, there is a hike to be enjoyed and many fellow hikers with which to enjoy it. Our hiking groups are the largest activity groups in the organization, and have the most variety. There are Naturalist, Midweek, UTHRs (20-30's) and Singles hikes from which to choose. In addition to the numerous outings, seminars are offered on such topics as conditioning, packing and boot fitting to teach you how to prepare.
