Many of us enjoyed our first outdoor experience during childhood, leading to a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and the lifelong gifts it offers. The Mountaineers is committed to bringing the opportunity of outdoor appreciation to today’s youth via our Youth and Family Initiative, well into its second year of operation. To this end, we’ve recently launched several new youth-outreach pilot programs. Thanks to hundreds of our skilled and trained volunteers, we have been able to grow our number of youth and family programs, which have provided thousands of youth experiences in just the past year.
Our youth-outreach programs introduce the young to the following benefits from the outdoor experience:
- A healthy lifestyle
- Outdoor recreation skills
- Self confidence
- Self reliance
- And not least, an appreciation for the natural world
In all, youth who participate in our programs build character and learn how important it is to take care of our wild spaces. Because the instructor-to-youth ratio is high and because they learn from highly skilled volunteer educators who themselves appreciate the outdoors (that is why they volunteer!), participating youth attain the deepest and most personalized experience available to them.
