Guidebooks
Looking for a place to hike, climb, snowshoe or kayak this weekend? We carry a wide selection of guidebooks for Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. We have guides that showcase the best routes backcountry travelers, going with children and even for finding trails within greater Seattle's parks.
Heading out of the state? We carry guides for other states and countries too! Come in and take a look at our selection of national and international guidebooks. Need a route book for Aconcagua? We've got one. Want to climb Devil's Tower? We've got the book. Want to sit in your chair and dream about climbing Everest? We have books for you too!
Narratives
Adventurers, scoundrels, explorers and tough-as-nails climbers. Tragedy, triumph, discovery and mystery. Our narrative selection contains stories of men and women who have defied, or tried to defy, the accepted ideas of that which a person is capable. Some have pushed beyond the physical limits of these accepted capabilities. If you are looking for a wealth of personalities and incredible journeys, we have one of the largest concentrations of mountain and exploration related stories to be found anywhere.
Instructional
We carry a large selection of instructional "how to" books for nearly every human-powered outdoor activity -- hiking, camping, climbing, biking, navigation, first aid, expedition planning, cooking, sea kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, fitness and training, leadership, photography, weather, and more.
Miscellaneous
We carry a small selection of books about conservation and the environment, field guides, histories, biographies and "coffee table" photography books. If we don't have a book in stock that you want, we can probably special order it for you. Just tell us what you need!
Maps
Whether you need a USGS 7.5’ quad, or a Green Trails 15’ map, or even a map of Everest, our selection of maps will not leave you wanting. We carry USGS and Green Trails maps for the entire Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges, Custom Correct maps for the Olympics, Washington State DNR maps for central and eastern Washington and the Capitol Forest, and National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps for the Cascades and national parks throughout the United States. For the kayakers out there, we carry the SeaTrails and WaveLength lines of kayaking and small craft maps.
Permits
We sell three permits in the bookstore:
The Northwest Forest Pass is required at most all trailheads within the state of Washington. You can purchase a day pass or annual pass.
Sno-Park permits are for the winter season and good for all Sno-Parks maintained by the Washington State Department of Parks and Recreation. These are available in a Seasonal permit and a Day permit. There is also a Groomed Trails sticker which attaches to the Seasonal permit and is required at Sno-Parks with machine-groomed cross-country ski trails.
The Discover Pass offers access to nearly 7 million acres of state recreation lands in Washington state. You can purchase a one day pass or annual pass.
