Mountains Don't Care, But We Do
Friday, March 19 - 7 p.m.
Mountaineers Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way NE
Free event; donations gratefully accepted at the door
Released to coincide with the 50 year anniversary of the Mountain Rescue Association, "Mountains Don't Care, But We Do" is a well crafted early history of mountain rescue in the Pacific Northwest. Author Dee Molenaar, himself a key player in the formation of the MRA, paints an in-depth look at the personalities and dynamics that shaped mountain rescue.
This event is a fundraiser for Seattle Mountain Rescue, and features a viewing of the documentary based on Dee Molenaar's book. This film brings alive many of the people from the book, and gives an overview of mountain rescue organizations today. It also addresses the big question: what motivates mountain rescuers and why do they face danger to help others in trouble?
This is a free event and is open to the general public. Donations to Seattle Mountain Rescue will be accepted at the door.
UPDATE: Dee Molenaar, the author of "Mountains Don't Care..." and a mountaineering legend, will be in attendance at this event. He will be available to sign books and talk about the early years of mountain rescue in the Pacific Northwest.

Evening of Legends
A Celebration of the Life and Achievements of Wolf Bauer
and the 75th Anniversary of the Climbing Committee
Friday, April 9, 2010
Dinner at 6:00 pm, dessert at 7:30 pm
Mountaineers Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way NE
It's not easy to list the many accomplishments of a Northwest legend like Wolf Bauer. Luckily, our very own Board Trustee Lynn Hyde took on the project, culminating in an April 1 release of the book "Crags, Eddies, and Rip Rap: The Sound Country Memoirs of Wolf Bauer." To celebrate the arrival of the book, and to bring together a Wolf's friends and admirers, we are hosting an Evening of Legends on April 9. The Whittaker brothers, Jim and Lou, will be on hand along with climbing legend Dee Molenaar. The keynote address will be given by Mountaineers historian Lowell Skoog.
A noted conservationist and outdoorsman, Wolf has been a figurehead in the outdoors community since the 1920s. Throughout his life, he has embodied the spirit of The Mountaineers. He not only founded the climbing course, but also several other conservation and outdoor activities groups throughout the region. Additionally, Wolf is one of the people who helped create the Mountain Rescue Assocation, a national organization that connects regional rescue groups like our own Seattle Mountain Rescue and Olympic Mountain Rescue. On February 26th of this year, Wolf was honored by the State Legislature for his contributions to mountaineering, kayaking, conservation, and the state parks.
If you wish to attend this special evening of wonderful stories, great food and local history, please RSVP through Brown Paper Tickets. The cost for this event is $100/person for dinner, or a $20 contribution for dessert and the book-signing. Please send any questions to Shauna Broady.

Check out the new Mountaineers Building
We're finally settled into our new digs in Seattle's Magnuson Park, and it sure feels good here. The park is a perfect place for The Mountaineers Building, which has plenty of space for classes, meetings and special events.
We posted a few pictures of the new building on Flickr. We will be adding to this photostream from time to time, so keep checking in to see what we've been up to.
